Mmmm...Sandwiches
For some reason, this has come up a lot at work lately. But now we're all curious: what do people call big sandwiches in different parts of the country? Subs, grinders, hoagies, heros, torpedos, etc? As best as I can tell, hoagies are a PA/NJ thing, grinders are mostly in New England, and New Orleans takes it to new levels with the muffalatta. We'd like to create a map of this; you can help by posting a comment telling us where you are (or where you're from) and what you call them. We can't pay you for your help but we can recommend a wonderful editorial on sandwiches from The Onion.

It looks like a group at Harvard has done some research on this, too.
Their survey results >>
I have a feeling your map will be much cooler though. Speaking of maps, maybe you can scan some of your maps sometime!

Folks, don't let that stop you from participating in this project, though...

It's definitely hoagies here in Pennsylvania. When I was growing up in Massachusetts, we had grinders but I guess I think of those as heated or toasted subs. And because my language has basically been homogenized thanks to television, I call them subs.

Uh, oh! I didn't mean to suggest the end of your project with that Harvard survey! It just goes to show this is a question that is important even to the people at Harvard. ;)

A muffalatta isn't like a hoagie or sub its a round loaf with olive salad, warm cold cuts, and melty provolone or mozzerala (sp?). In New Orleans subs/hoagies/etc. are called.....
