See More Hispanic Photos

Slate managed to get screenshots of a Bush 2004 prototype page that someone accidentally left lying around the Net. The shopping page, featuring some amazingly tacky football jerseys (with "USA 43" on them) and some baby bibs, is memorable. More head-scratching is this pre-editorial by RNC advisor Matthew Dowd, where he tries to convince himself that the plummeting economy won't be a factor in next year's Selection.

There's also a cute picture of First Lady Laura "reading to Hispanic children" (It's clear the child is holding the actual book, but we've seen that the Bushes are fond of letting the kids do all the actual reading) with the wonderful caption "See more Hispanic photos" next to it. Welcome to your career as cynical campaign props, muchachas!

Incidentally, it occurs to me that I used the words "Bush" and "lying" in that first paragraph -- that reminds me to plug this CafePress shop with variations on that same theme for sale.

in the lowe's/shattuck parking lot last night i saw a jetta or something with a girl about my age in it and there was a sticker on the bumper that said, "BUSH in 2004" in big letters under adjectives that included "integrity" and "morality." i gave this girl a dirty look and said, "are you kidding?" but her windows were up. she looked confused. i felt scared.
did you read anything about the influence the white house is having on the american cancer society and the american medical association, as well as some environmental group? where they're having these "reputable" places change the wording on websites and in articles so it seems like global warming's not so bad and abortion causes breast cancer? i have fists that want to punch.

Hey Christine, do you have any website URLs for articles talking about that stuff? I don't keep up with news as much as I probably should. :(

Don't they know these new-fangled jerseys are out of style? Just look at your ordinary, run-of-the-mill NBA lottery pick, rock, rap, or rock/rap stars, and you'd realize the only way to market apparel like this is to go retro. So unless these people start producing stuff like that Franklin Pierce #14 wool number, I don't think the kids are gonna dole out the cash. Meanwhile, I'll wait on that double-knit "Ford #38."

It scares me to think the people trying to sell these things are the ones trying to 'fix' the economy.

Yeah, Christine, I want to see that too. It's pretty chilling.

Andy...I'm holding out to get that funky Grover Cleveland jersey with #22 on one sleeve and #24 on the other. I'll still proudly wear my #11 Polk for now though.

i have no URLs because, old fashioned as it sounds, i read em on paper not online. i can tell you where, though:
i read about the ama and the acs changing their wording about women's health stuff in the newest Ms magazine, the one with janeane garofolo on the cover. about the environmental study saying global warming isn't as bad as it actually is was just meniond in a quote in (i believe) the newest or second newest time magazine.
i'm sure there's more to be said about both and probably more, but those are the things i read recently.

I found the Ms Magazine article on their website at www.msmagazine.com/june03/jordan.asp
