What Goes On In Your Mind

Seven things that flashed through my brain when I heard that John Ashcroft is going on a multi-city tour to promote the Patriot Act:

  • Is this his first solo tour? I liked his show with the Bob Jones Band at Great Woods in '98, but I'm not sure how his latest album ("Lost To A Dead Man") would translate to a live set. It was so overproduced.
  • I've got to hook up with a counterprotest.
  • If I had a little more street theater in me, it would be fun to get a bunch of people to dress up like Nazi soldiers and cheer wildly throughout his speech.
  • Never mind; guys like Ashcroft have made a career out of not letting people like me within 500 yards of him.
  • Maybe a T-shirt, with one of those fake Calvins peeing on a Ford logo or whatever, but change it to Ashcroft's face and change the Ford logo to the US Constitution. Actually, that's probably been done.
  • I just hope he does "Let the Eagle Soar" in the encore. That song changed my life.
  • I wrote a song of my own (to the tune of the popular Xmas song):

    Well, you'd better watch out
    You'd better behave
We've got a terrifed nation to save
John Ashcroft is coming to town

    He's making a list
    Of those who would say
Anything bad 'bout the U.S. of A.
John Ashcroft is coming to town

He sees where you've been surfing
He knows what books you've read
He knows all of the treasonous thoughts
That you've got inside your head

So take care what you think
    Or watch on TV
    Or you'll be detained indefinitely
John Ashcroft is coming to town

The girls and boys on websites
    Have had their final say
    We're building them new housing
    Down at Guantanamo Bay

    So, you'd better watch out
    You'd better behave
In the land of the free and home of the brave
John Ashcroft is coming to town

This may be my final post.

You probably violated about 1,378 legal subclauses of the Act just by hitting the 'publish' button on this one, Michael. GOOD JOB!

Hear my boss, Jean Langley, talk about the Patriot act and public libraries on WBUR Friday morning.
    We are all Patriots.
