Goodbye, Old Friend

It's official...my DVD player, a fixture in my life since April 2000, has shuffled off its mortal digital coil. Any disc I put in now makes an ominous whirring sound for a few seconds, then a "No Disc Found" message pops up on the screen. Two different cleaning products failed to do the trick.

Let the record show that the first movie it showed was Good Will Hunting and the last one was 28 Days Later. (No, smartasses, I haven't finished Birth of a Nation yet; anyone who wants to slog through it and write a guest review is welcome to.)

Any suggestions on a good, fairly inexpensive model for a replacement?

I would suggest buying an Apex from WalMart for about $49.95. If you are willing to spend another $25.00, they have a great Pioneer DVD player (DMR-E30). The great thing about the Pioneer, is that it has DVD-R reading capabilities. If a friend makes you a DVD-R, you can easily play it.

I have always wanted to review 'The Birth Of A Nation'. Are you serious about your invitation?

I'll check the Apex out, Robin - thanks. But I can't in good conscience go to Walmart after reading Nickel and Dimed and learning more about their visceral antiunion stance. But I'll look into it and see where I can get it more locally.
